Show Your Horse to Potential Buyers
Five Tips for Showing Your Horse to Buyers
Selling a horse can be nerve-wracking. Someone's coming to judge your animal, and you want it to go well.
Here's a few tips that can make a big difference:
1️⃣ Schedule viewings one at a time. Give each buyer your full attention — it's a better experience for them and easier to manage for you. Get there 30 minutes early, and have your paperwork ready (pedigree, registration, any vet notes). You don't want to be scrambling for information room while they're waiting.
2️⃣ Catch your horse yourself. Don't have it already tied up when they arrive. Walking out and catching it in front of them shows it's easy to handle — a small thing that makes a big impression. Make sure it's clean and well-groomed, mane and tail brushed, and skip the bell boots or bandages. Buyers need to see the whole horse.
3️⃣ Greet them properly. Introduce yourself, make them feel welcome, and tack up in front of them. Watching how a horse behaves while being tacked tells a buyer a lot, so let them see it.
4️⃣ You ride first. Always. Get on in a controlled area, before handing the reins over. If your horse has any quirks, mention them — it keeps everyone safe and shows you're honest.
5️⃣ Give them room to connect. If a buyer wants a second look, arrange it. It usually means they're serious. A reference from a trainer or someone who knows the horse well can also go a long way toward building confidence.
Do it right and the whole experience feels straightforward for everyone involved.
