My Journey into Rural Photography

We love shining a spotlight on the incredible people who make up Australia’s rural and equine community. This month, we’re featuring Liss Leeson, a talented rural life photographer based in St George, QLD, who travels far and wide capturing the beauty, grit, and quiet magic of life on the land. From dusty campdraft arenas to golden paddocks at dusk, her work tells honest stories through a natural lens and it all started with a camera, a creative streak, and a love for rural life. Here’s her story.

I’ve always called the country home. I grew up rurally, working on stations and throwing myself into the travelling, contracting life of the agricultural industry. Those years were full of dust, sweat, and the kind of hard work that shapes you for life. Along the way, I picked up a camera and now I’m a mum to two beautiful boys, raising them in the same wide open spaces that shaped me.

Creativity has always been in my bones. Even while working in ag, I found myself reaching for a camera to capture the moments that made this lifestyle so unique – the quiet magic of dawn over the paddocks, the grit of a camp draft arena, the joy of kids running barefoot through the dirt. Over time, those snapshots became more than just a hobby. My passion grew, my skills sharpened, and before I knew it, photography had shifted from a side interest to my full-time career.

Now, I’m based in St George, QLD, but my work takes me across Australia. I specialise in photographing rural life, events, and the everyday moments that too often slip by unnoticed. I work with natural light and an honest approach, because I believe real moments speak louder than anything staged. My photography is for the barefoot kids, the windblown hair, the work worn hands, and the golden paddocks at dusk. Whether it’s a family gathered on the farm, a newborn nestled into mum’s chest, or the peaceful chaos of everyday life in the bush – I’m here for it all.

High-quality photos are your horse’s first impression in an online sale. Great images attract attention, build trust, and help you achieve the best sale price. If you're relatively confident with a camera or have a late-model smartphone, getting some decent photos is possible by following some simple steps.

Prepare Your Horse

Groom well : Clean coat, brushed mane and tail, trimmed hooves.
Bare is best: Photograph your horse without tack so that buyers can see its features and confirmation.
Keep tack simple: In images featuring tack, make sure it's clean and fits your horse well.
Condition counts: A healthy, appropriately-fed and exercised horse looks best.

Get the Lighting Right

Best time: Early morning or late afternoon (“golden hour”).
Avoid harsh midday sun : It creates shadows and glare.
Face the light: Keep the light behind you and on your horse’s side.

Choose Clean Backgrounds

Pick a simple, uncluttered background — fences, paddocks, or open fields.
Avoid busy sheds, vehicles, or people in the shot.
Make sure your horse stands out clearly against the background color.

Capture the Key Angles

Understanding Horse Height Measurements

Horses are measured in “hands,” with one hand equaling 4 inches. The height is measured from the ground to the highest point of the withers - the ridge between the horse’s shoulder blades.

What You’ll Need

A flat, level surface for your horse to stand on.
A standard measuring tape.
A helper to hold the horse still, if necessary.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Prepare the Horse: Place your horse on a flat, solid surface. Ensure it’s standing squarely with weight evenly distributed on all four legs.
Find the Withers: The withers are the highest point of the shoulders, where the neck meets the back. This is the reference point for measuring height.
Use the Measuring Tape: Using a measuring tape, hold one end at the ground and stretch it up to the withers, keeping it as straight as possible.
Record the Measurement: Note the height in inches. If the height doesn’t divide evenly into hands, convert the remaining inches into fractions of a hand.
Example 1: A horse that measures 58 inches high would be 14½ hands (58/4 = 14.5), but because two is half of four, it is expressed as 14.2 hh.

Some registered horse breeds require genetic disorder testing for sire-registered stallions, and record positive results on registrations. In this article, we're exploring the requirements of the Australian Stock Horse Society (ASHS) for registered Australian Stock Horses.

Common tests offered in Australia include: OLWS (frame/overo lethal white), HYPP, HERDA, PSSM1, Malignant Hyperthermia (MH), and GBED. These are standard in a 6-panel used by ASHS .

DNA profiling (genotyping) is used for identification and parentage verification; several Australian labs and services provide profiling and parentage/registration testing.

Disorders commonly included in ASHS’s 6-panel GDT

OLWS / Frame Overo (Lethal White Overo) - a coat-pattern mutation that in homozygous foals causes a non-viable intestine problem; typically tested as a recessive/carrier check.
HYPP (Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis) - muscle weakness/episodes; caused by a dominant SCN4A variant (one copy can produce disease). Important to avoid breeding affected animals.
HERDA (Hereditary Equine Regional Dermal Asthenia) - severe skin fragility (like Ehlers-Danlos in people); autosomal recessive in Quarter-horse related lines.

DNA profile / genotyping : lab determines a set of genetic markers unique to the horse (used for identification, theft recovery, and registration). Parentage testing compares profiles to verify sire/dam.
Many breed registries (including Australian bodies) require profiles or will accept accredited-lab reports for registration and parentage confirmation. Check the registry’s preferred lab list or procedures before ordering.

How to get tested in Australia (labs, sample types, costs)

Labs/services in Australia : Practical Horse Genetics (orders/tests online), Racing Australia / Equine Genetics Research Centre (EGRC) in Scone (services for breed associations), plus other private providers. Choose an accredited lab if you need results for registration.
Sample types : preferred - mane/tail hair with roots (20–40 hairs) OR cheek (buccal) swabs (some labs prefer swabs). Follow the lab’s sampling instructions exactly (paper envelope, avoid plastic bags that can cause mold, clearly label).
Costs (examples / ballpark) : ASHS lists the 6-panel GDT (for horses already DNA-profiled with ASHS) at AUD $130 (Jan 2024 GDT price on their doc).
